About Sunderbans:


Sunderbans National Park in India is one of the World's largest deltas and the mangrove forest formed by the confluence of three rivers the ganga,the Brahmaputra and the Meghna-covering an area of 2,2585 sq km wildlife sanctuary,which extends into Bangladesh too. The Sundarbans WildlifeSanctuary, the world's largest estuarine sanctuary is really worth a visit.

There are a large number of activities that can be undertaken at the Sunderban National Park, together with observing the wildlife such as the chital, crocodile, monkeys, estuarine and marine turtle, dolphins and various kinds of birds. For instance, a cruise through the largest estuarine delta in the world is a thrilling experience that might even give you a glimpse of the majestic tiger. You could also come across rich tribal folklore, and woodcutters, honey collectors and fishermen out in the wild working for their survival

Sundarbans Tiger Reserve provides characteristic type of habitat suitable for animals inhabiting vast tidal swamp area. Because of their intimate association with the estuarine environment, sizeable portion of aquatic and semi-aquatic animal communities are inter-related with the animals inhabiting the land areas. The uniqueness of the habitat is said to have contributed to certain behavioral trends, which are characteristic of Sundarbans tigers only. It is considered that man-eating propensity of tiger in this area is hereditarily acquired over a period of generations in the process of consumption of saline water. 

Fauna:-
The tiger reserve in Sunderban is a major tourist attraction. The number of tigers in this reserve is among the highest in the country. According to a census conducted in the 1980, the population of tiger here was close to 400. Besides the tiger, other forms of wildlife also inhabit these mangrove forests. The Gangetic dolphin, little porpoise, fishing cat, Indian fox, jungle cat, small Indian civet, common grey mongoose, spotted deer, wild pig, Indian flying fox, rhesus monkey and pangolin are some of the residents here.

Flora:-
Fascinating life forms await you in this largest estuarine delta in the world, Sunderbans. In April and May the flaming red leaves of the Genwa, edge the emerald islands. The crab like red flowers of the Kankara and the yellow blooms of Khalsi add to the dazzling display. As you penetrate into the forests of Sundarbans, this fairyland unfolds its mysterious beauty.

How to get there :-
Nearest metro city :- The sunderbans is situated about 100 Kilometers from the capitals of West Bengal, kolkata, in eastern india.

Nearest Airport:- Subhash chandra internationals Airport, 40 kilometers from the kolkata city center.

Railway:- Kolkata has two main stations - sealdah and Howrah that are connected to all cities of india.

Bus:- Buses ply from Kolkata to sonakhali or Basanti Daily.

Where to stay :-

M.V. Chitrarekha has excellent arrangements for on-board stay. One can also avail the facilities of tourist lodges at Sajnekhali, Bakkhali and Piyali for overnight stay. At Dayapur, Sundarban Tiger Camp provides both A/C adn N/AC accomodation and also organises package tours from Kolkata.
